Summer Semester Programme Organising Team
Introduction
LJMU have a team of dedicated academic and support staff who work closely to organise the Summer Semester Programme.
The support network provided by staff to all students on the programme assists them from application to graduation ensuring they get the service and care they require.
Through the Pastoral Care Tutor system, an email network, regular meetings with staff and the specially designed website students can find the answers they need through a multitude of channels.
Since 2002 we have welcomed hundreds of international students and are confident you will find the LJMU experience both rewarding and enjoyable.
Collaborative Partnerships
Maureen EvansCollaborative Partnerships Support Officer
Maureen Evans is the Collaborative Partnerships Support Officer in the Collaborative Partnerships Team. Maureen works closely with the head of the Collaborative Partnerships and the Programme Leaders from the all faculties involved in the Summer Semester programmes in co-ordinating the non-academic schedule of the programme. This includes arranging student accommodation, organising the arrival weekend, the LJMU induction event, and the end of programme social at the Adelphi Hotel. Maureen also ensures the information on the Summer Semester website is updated and is responsible for disseminating information to students via the yahoo email group and ensuring students queries are answered.
Maureen has worked for LJMU since 1998, initially in the Faculty of Education Community and Leisure before progressing into the Student Recruitment & Widening Access Department and finally the Collaborative Partnership Team. Before entering Higher Education Maureen worked for twenty years in the buying office for the Littlewoods retail group - the founder of which was Sir John Moores from where LJMU takes its name.
Programme Leaders
Dr Martin Selby
Martin is the Programme Leader for the Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Summer Semester. Martin has been involved in a variety of international collaborative projects, both at LJMU and in previous posts. He is also a PhD supervisor, currently supervising students in the field of urban tourism, place marketing, visitor experience, and culture. With a background in marketing, Martin studied for a degree and a masters in Human Geography and Tourism Management respectively, and a PhD focussing on the images and experiences of urban tourism. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and he has presented conference papers at international conferences, and published journal articles and book chapters in the field or urban tourism, place image, and the experience of tourism. He has delivered keynote speeches and invited talks for various organisations, including one entitled ‘Curly Perms or Culture’ at the Institute of Travel and Tourism’s Aspire Conference. Martin recently published a sole-authored book entitled ‘Understanding Urban Tourism: image, culture, and experience’.
Dr Mike Shaw

Dr. Simon DowellChemistry & Biology
Dr. Simon Dowell is the programme leader for the Chemistry and Biology programme and he also leads and administers the Dissertation module. He completed his PhD on bird behaviour at the University of Oxford in 1990 and began his career with the Game Conservancy Trust, carrying out research on wildlife management in southern England. He came to Liverpool JMU in 1992 to take up a lectureship in Conservation Ecology and his teaching covers ecology, conservation, animal behaviour and field methods. His research includes work on the ecology of bird communities in China in response to changes in forestry practice and his collaborative work in Sichuan Province has led to the protection of over 1,000 km2 of Chinese forests for biodiversity conservation. He is now the Director of his School which has 48 staff and is responsible for teaching biological and environmental subjects to over 600 students.
Mr Colin Paul
Commerce
Colin is a senior lecturer in the School of Management, in the faculty of Business and Law. He is the Route Leader for the Purchasing and Logistics Management programme on the BA(Hons ) Business Studies Degree Programme. He joined the university in 1994 after teaching in two other management schools in the midlands and St Helens.During his teaching caree he has taught in Europe, the Middle East as well as the Far East. For several years he was a Chief Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. He also enjoyed a successful spell as programme director for their successful practical negotiation course.
Colin is presently the programme designer and leader for the Sinopec Supply Management Programme. This involves 20 Chinese managers from the Chinese state oil and chemical organisation studying Supply Management ‘Best Practices’.
The areas of research and consultancy that interest him are in strategic purchasing, environmental procurement and corporate management.
Proir to entering acadaemia in 1980 he was employed as a purchasing manager in the jewellery indusry.

Dr Iqbal Akthar
Mass Communications
Dr Iqbal Akthar is the Lecturer / Programme Leader for Mass Communications since 2005. He has delivered lectures on a wide range of courses in Mass Communications in Singapore and UK. He has also worked closely with Monash University, Australia in delivering courses to Singapore distance learning students.
Iqbal completed his PhD at the University of Sussex in 2009. His doctoral research was on Computer Mediated Communication, Online Fans and Virtual Communities (Title: Internet, Identity and Fandom). Based on his 12 month ethnography online, his work looked at the performance of identities online and offline.His focused was on how computer-mediated communication (interaction in cyberspace) is transformed into socially meaningful field, how online fans talk about the show and relate it thei everyday lives. He examined the concept of online fan community and what it means to be a member of that community.Iqbal explored how fans perform online and then offline and return to the forum to talk about their real experiences they encounter in their everyday lives. He looked at what it means to be growing up with a show and a web-communiy and how this growing up and being mature reflect on their identites.
From 2006-2009, Iqbal was the Programme Leader for MA in Internet and Communication Studies.He taught Internet Research Methods and Media Technologies and Society. He also supervised students writing on online fan culture, cyber-identities and online communities. His main research interests are in computer-mediated commnication, cyber-identities, virtual communities, fandom, audiences, youth cultures and online research methods.
Ms Jennifer McWilliam
Computing & Information
Jennie McWilliam, MSc, BSc (Hons) is a Senior Lecturer in the Computer Information Systems Group in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. Before lecturing at Liverpool John Moores University, Jennie worked as foreign exchange dealer with the National Westminster Bank, and spent sixteen years as a systems support specialist with UNISYS, one of the largest computer companies in the world. Jennie has a BSc (Hons) degree in Computing, Maths, and Environmental Science, as well as a Master’s degree in Management. Her current research is e-commerce, and as well as journal publications has been a speaker at a number of conferences including, IFIP (International Federation of Information Processing) Conference in Montreal and the University of Eindhoven, Holland. Having spent over eight years working at LJMU, Jennie is the Programme Leader for the TAR/Malaysia top up programme. She is currently the module leader for Professional Issues in IT, Business Systems Development II, Design and Strategies for E-Commerce, E-Technology Workshop, as well as the HND E-Commerce. Jennie is a final year project supervisor for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and is also one of the Academic supervisors for students during their Industrial placement year, which is part of their degree programme. She is currently the event organiser for the Merseyside branch of The British Computer Society, and is active within the International Recruitment office, representing LJMU in countries all over the world.
