Tourism and Hospitality Management

plane flying through cloudsIntroduction

Our MA Tourism and Hospitality Management Development Programme has been established in response to growth in the need for higher-level qualified management within the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Our philosophy is to assist your professional development by helping you to develop your knowledge and skills in order to tackle the demands of higher level management today. Our hope is that you will enjoy the programme and that your learning will ultimately have considerable impact on how you approach ‘management’ in one of the world’s largest industries.

The MA Tourism and Hospitality Programme is flexible insomuch that classes may be held in mornings, afternoons or the 5-8pm evening period and students will have some optional opportunity when selecting modules. Evening classes help professionals in employment to take part in the programme. A key feature of the course is the opportunity to engage with fellow professionals as well as specialising within your own field.  Potential students for this course may be working in management in a number of fields such as hotels or other types of accommodation facilities, bars, restaurants etc.

Our MA Tourism and Hospitality Programme has strong ties with major employers locally, and we are rapidly developing links internationally. The course is unique and differs from other existing MA programmes through its deliberate approach of bringing together professionals from the industry with recent graduates. Our explicit aim is that both groups will learn from each other and that there will be a real synergy from working in this way. You can also specialise within your own area of interest and develop your learning through collaborative approaches.

Course modules

To complete the MA award you must achieve 180 M-Level credits. Please also note that to achieve the MA you must have passed all the ‘core’ modules, and please further note that you will not receive ‘certificates’ as you pass the certificate and diploma stages.

During the induction period, students will be asked to complete ‘module choice’ forms. ‘Core’ modules MUST be selected (and eventually passed) for specific named awards (such as Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or MA). Our intention is to try provide sufficient choice of optional modules for you to be able to design a route to meet your needs and interests.

However please note. Programmes or modules can only be taught if we have viable numbers on a course or a particular module. This is not an issue of economy of scale, but of good practice in learning; for effective teaching and learning a viable group size is vital. If it is not permissible for a Programme or module to run, then students will be offered an alternative. The Programme Leader will keep you informed of any changes and the University’s decision is final.

Modules Offered

Please note that this programme does not include modules pertaining to food and beverage operations, food production, or food service management.
