ARI Director Professor Bode elected to Council of EAS

Professor Mike Bode, Director of LJMU's Astrophysics Research Institute, was recently elected to the Council of the European Astronomical Society (EAS).

The Society promotes and advances astronomy in Europe and, as an independent body, it is able to act on matters that need to be handled at a European level on behalf of the European astronomical community.

Mike, who is a former Secretary and Vice President of one of the EAS's affiliated societies - the Royal Astronomical Society, commented: "It is a great honour to be elected as a council member of the EAS. I look forward in particular to helping the Society forge stronger links with the European Commission and enhance its influence in European policy-making."

Professor Thierry Courvoisier, EAS President and also President of the Swiss Academy of Sciences, commented: "I'm very happy that the EAS council can count on Mike's competence and his eagerness in developing an effective European astronomical community. I'm also happy for the opportunity to work with Mike, whom I have known and appreciated for a number of years."

To add to his international duties, earlier this year Mike was invited to become a member of the International Advisory Board of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand and also to serve as a member of the Scientific Council, overseeing the operation of the 'Physics of the Two Infinities and Origins - P2IO.' P2IO is a group of national laboratories and universities which has been established by the French Government under its Laboratoires d'Excellence programme.
