LJMU LGB staff, students and alumni at Liverpool Pride 2012
10 August 2012
For the 3rd year running our staff and students, alumni, friends and families marched alongside 5,000 people at Liverpool Pride.
This year we were joined by Professor Kate Johnston, Dean of ECL and HASS Faculties and her partner Nick.
Kate commented:
"The march was amazing despite the rain – it had such a positive feel and the support from people in the streets was brilliant. Supporting the rights of LGBT people (and supporting an inclusive society) is something that I have felt committed to since I was a student (a long time ago) so I felt proud to be with people on Saturday. The speeches were really inspiring."
For the first time ever a Premier League Football Club; Liverpool Football Club, Alex and Steven Gerrard, staff, supporters and members of the LFC women's team took part.
Patron Angela Eagle MP was at the helm of the procession alongside Liverpool Pride Trustees, representatives from the City Council including Lord Mayor Cllr Sharon Sullivan and Deputy Mayor Paul Brant and the family of murdered teenager Michael Causer.
Pride-goers were treated to entertainment at the Waterfront and in the Stanley Street Quarter with an LGBT market and a Health and Wellbeing zone. LJMU students volunteered as stewards on the march.
Zoran Blackie, Chair of Liverpool Pride, said:
"It may have rained on our parade but it didn't dampen our spirits. I am so grateful to all of the team, volunteers, sponsors, venues and most importantly the local LGBT community, their friends and families who made the day so special and our city loud and proud. Here’s to next year!"
LJMU has been a proud sponsor of Liverpool Pride since its inaugural launch in 2010. In just three years, Liverpool Pride has established itself as one of the major highlights in the city and the wider LGBT community’s summer calendar. A record number of 56,000 people enjoyed Pride this year.
