Formula Student Team set new Silverstone record
17 July 2012
Liverpool John Moores University's Formula Student Team continue to move up the rankings. In their third full season, the team became the second highest ranked UK team in the Formula Student competition staged at Silverstone, climbing six places from last year to finish 12th out of 102 teams (with 50 UK entries).
The event attracted engineering talent from university departments around the world to design and build their own single-seater racing car. The team's entry was judged against exacting specifications which covered design, speed, endurance and environmental criteria. Highlights, included 5th place overall in the Skid Pad event, 12th place in the Endurance event and 17th place in the Sprint Event.
The Formula Student team attracts support from students from MEng, BEng and BSc programmes working in design, manufacture and media support. Edward Bond representing the LJMU Formula Student team said:
"This was a great team effort and I'd like to thank everyone for working so hard to pull this off."
Professor Ian Jenkinson, Director of the University's School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations said:
"Employers use participation in activities such as Formula Student to identify potential employees. Success in this competition raises our University's profile both nationally and internationally and demonstrates the quality of our graduates."
LJMU's Formula Student Team are now based in the Vehicle Engineering Laboratory which was officially opened by Richard Else, Operations Director, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Halewood, in May this year. Based at the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations, the laboratory hosts the new driving simulator, a model 401CR system supplied by Force Dynamics. This is used as a training platform for the Formula Student Team who model their vehicles and use the simulator to prepare for events. The team will also be competing at the Formula Student event in Spain later in the summer.
