As part of the ongoing PRINT strategy roll out, a number of improvements have been introduced over the last few weeks which greatly improve the printing and copying facilities available to all computer users.
'FollowMe' printing
In the past, if you wanted to send a document to print, it was sent to a printer queue at a specific location within the university. This has now been replaced with FollowMe printing which allows a document to be released at any printer, no matter where it is located. For example, you may be working in Aldham Robarts, but want to print the document in a completely different building - FollowMe allows you to do this. Whether you want to print in monochrome or colour, single sided or duplex, at any location, simply set the printing properties and then send the document to print - there’s no specific printer queue you need to select.
With FollowMe printing now implemented across all sites, the previous printer queue names will be removed from the Change Network Printer facility on all LJMU PCs. However, for compatibility, they will remain in place for the short term.
Web-based printing
The new web based printing service extends LJMU’s printing facilities still further, enabling printing from the wireless network, or anywhere on the internet using a laptop or any other types of machine. Most common document types can be printed, including all of the common Microsoft Office file formats, Adobe Acrobat, image files and web pages. No additional software needs to be installed on your PC, as the document is uploaded and submitted to the print queue via a simple web page. As it uses FollowMe, it can be collected from any printer within the university.
Off-Campus Applications service
It will soon be possible to print from the Off Campus Applications service to the FollowMe print queues – this service is expected to go live in the next few weeks.
Finding out more
To go with all of these changes is the launch of the Printing and Copying web site. Part of help with computers, it brings together everything to do with printing and copying at LJMU. Find it at http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/cis/printing/ or via the Printing and copying link on the student home page.
