Rhino family health checks at Knowsley Safari Park
13 January 2011
Following the birth of a baby white rhino from ‘Piglet’, a 17 year old rhino who carried her offspring for an incredible gestation period of 17 months in the womb, Knowsley Safari Park is working with LJMU researchers to keep up to date health checks on the rhino family using a thermal camera. This detects any signs of illness including elevated temperature and allows consideration of treatment techniques without the need to come into direct contact with the animals, therefore giving them minimal distress.
This is part of a research project by LJMU’s Natural Sciences Department, recently reported in regional TV media, which uses the same technology as airport cameras to detect if passengers are showing signs of flu.
